  Harvey Takes Best Chris-Craft

Each year, the Chris-Craft Club offers a trophy to the best Chris-Craft boat at Keels & Wheels. This year, it was Ray and Carol Harvey's Hemi-powered Capri that took the trophy. Capri was the featured boat of this year's show, and clearly, Capris don't come any prettier than Ray's. This boat has also graced the docks at White Rock Lake on several occasions, and draws praise wherever she goes. Congratulations, Ray!

Parker wins Corinthian for Gar Wood Basket Case Restoration

Dave Parker turned the tables on some prankster buddies of his who, seven years ago, bought Dave a large number of raffle tickets for a grey hull 1947 Gar Wood Ensign just to be sure he'd win. Well, Dave rose to the challenge and restored the classic hulk to a condition better than new, receiving the coveted Corinthian award at Keels & Wheels for his efforts.

Dave is seen here (above left) flanked by K&W co-chair Paul Merriman on the left and Grand Marshall and racing legend Bobby Unser on the right.

Dave's "buddies" are eating a little crow these days, and with good reason...the Gar Wood looks MAHVELOUS (left). Dave, we see your trophy is a dolphin rising from the waves. Is that the nautical equivalent of the Phoenix rising from the ashes? Congratulations on a spectacular job, and a trophy well deserved.

Rathbun takes Best Antique Outboard

Chip and Marilyn Rathbun's 1942 Century Imperial Sports outboard was the winner in the Keels & Wheels Antique Outboard Class. This rare boat was one of the few civilian boats built during the War, and has benefited from a meticulous restoration. Chip has also rebuilt the craft's Johnson outboard, a task for which he was eminently qualified as the grand poobah of the Texas chapter of the Antique Outboard Motor Club. Chip and his Century have been in the winner's circle before, which speaks well of his craftsmanship. Kudos, Chip!

Griffin Nabs Best Classic Outboard

Keith (seen smiling under that 'stache at left) and Rhonda Griffin's first trip to Keels & Wheels was well rewarded with a first place in the Classic Outboard class for their sweetly restored 1956 Yellow Jacket Catalina (second photo at left). The Griffins hail from Crosby, TX, northeast of Houston. Griff discovered the WBA when he was looking for information on a Yellow Jacket he found in a barn on a hunting lease property. The third photo at left shows just what kind of shape the boat was in when Griff got ahold of it. Griff's natural ability with woodworking and occasional advice from the Yellow Jacket wing of the WBA got Griff all the way to a win! Griff and Rhonda join a growing number of wooden boat owners from around the great state of Texas who have recently joined the WBA! Congratulations, Griff!
