Austin Hill Country Show Sunny and Fun!

It was great to have such a healthy turnout for the 2024 Austin Hill Country Show at Lake LBJ, October 3-5. Above, John Ables is grinning from ear to ear in his Chris-Craft. (Robinson photo),

Below, Cindy Chebultz posted this lovely photo on Facebook shortly after her arrival at the Horseshoe Bay Marina.

Above, Phil Wolff's Resorter is trying out its 427 in the glimmer of the sun. (Robinson photo).

Below, WBA president Phil Brosseau attended the show and posted a number of nice photos on Facebook, including this one of the docks at Horseshoe Bay Marina. Thanks to Lisa and Lindy Robinson for organizing the event!

Katina Real has done it again, organizing a great show at Pier 121, October 19, 2024. Above, WBA member boats are docked for visitors' viewing pleasure in the Pier 121 Marina. All photos courtesy of Dan Stober. Below, Donny Lawson's "Déja Vu" took home a trophy.

Above, Eric Wueste's pretty fiberglass Yellow Jacket took home Best of Show. Below, Jim Wolfe's "Selah" won a trophy, too. Jim Donovan took home the Commodore's Choice Award for his XK22. Thanks to all our WBA members who brought their boats! Video here!

Barney Gulley Shows How to Build a Boat from Scratch!

Barney Gulley made the long drive from Denison to present his story of building two different kinds of small wooden boats from scratch: the first, a gaff-rigged sailboat designed for the grueling Texas 200 race, and the second, a sailing canoe with outriggers (left).

Barney explained his use of lumberyard materials, epoxy and fiberglass to construct wooden boats with modern materials. His presentation got us all thinking about another approach to wooden boating. Thanks, Barney, for a fascinating look into a contemporary segment of the wooden boat hobby!

The meeting also included regular club business, with a reminder that we will be voting on a new VP and Treasurer at the November meeting. Please be sure to attend!

Project Updates from the Robin McGeorge Boat Shop!

(Above) Chris McKeehan inventories engine parts for cleaning and painting for the Continental. The McKeehans are planning on a second coat of bilge paint in the hull next.

(Above) Carl Lapiska dry fits a finely milled trim piece on the edge of the transom of his Super Sport to privide a nice finish to the aft deck.

(Above) Gordon Spriggs check the deck clamps on his Glen-L for fairness, as he prepares to fasten the covering boards. Gordon also framed in the engine compartment.

(Above) Greg McIlvoy uses a thin sanding block to feather the paint/varnish line on his Coronado prior to painting.

Joel Odom and Alan Oppenheimer take a break after masking off the varnished areas of the McIlvoy Coronado.

Engine specialist Barry Stone has plenty of management oversight as Bill Mott, Phil Brosseau and Alan Oppenheimer watch him work on their Sabre's V-8.

(Above) Chris McKeehan cleans an exhaust tube from the Continental using the wire wheel. She was also checked out on the angle grinder on this same day.

(Above) Carl has routered a pretty caulk seam rabbet between the aft deck planks and the trim strip for a factory look. We can't wait to see the finished product.

(Above) The covering boards for Gordon's Glen-L are all cut and and laid out for fitting. He'll drill some more holes, then bed them all in Sikaflex.

(Above) Greg learns woodworking patience as he feathers the varnish line on the Coronado's starboard side.

Bill Mott continues the masking duties on the McIlvoy Coronado to prepare for painting the white sections.

Barry Stone lends the Century Partners some engine expertise as they eagerly look forward to the re-starting and water test of their Century Sabre.

Next Monthly Meeting November 21, Featuring Social Media Marketing

boatOur next meeting will be Thursday, November 21st, 2024, at 7 p.m. at Two Guys From Italy in Dallas. Come at 5:30 and join us for the pre-meeting dinner. You'll receive an email reminder for the meeting a few days prior. We'll be continuing our door prize tradition, giving out an e-book, or print book of the lucky winner's choice, or a complimentary design of a boat show placard. Our presentation this month will be Matthew Ables, son of WBA member John Ables. Matthew is a successful social media influencer, creating regular posts about unusual locations and situations, garnering millions of views. Come and hear how social media may help build awareness of antique and classic boating.

If you can't join in person, you'll be using the Zoom application for your cell phone or your home computer. To make things easier at meeting time, it would be a good idea for you to go to your normal smart phone app store to download Zoom Cloud Meetings, or go to Zoom.us on your home computer and sign up. Prior to the meeting, you will be sent an email with a link to join the meeting, and further instructions. Those who wait to download Zoom will also receive a link to do that just before the meeting starts. If you are among those who need a few attempts to be successful with technology, you may want to get the downloading taken care of ahead of time.

Our meetings are a great opportunity to socialize with fellow WBA members and to talk shop on questions on everything from paint and varnish to carburetor kits. Please join us on Zoom to be a part of our monthly fellowship!

Shop Talk and Musings: Special Thanks to the Robinsons

Lisa and Lindy Robinson, seen here aboard their Chris-Craft, "Class of '59" with son Chris (seated at right), have been real pillars of our hobby. In addition to their leadership of the SW Chapter of ACBS, their organization of events, including the Lake LBJ show, the Lake Conroe Rendezvous and the boating side of Keels & Wheels has provided fabulous opportunities for us to gather, enjoy fellowship, and share our love of antique and classic boating with the public.

Thanks, Lisa and Lindy, for stepping up to the responsibilities of leadership in the ACBS, which benefits us all.

And finally, please take a look in the shed or garage for leftover parts or other salable items you would like to donate to the Club. Contact David Kanally at david@historywithheart.com for more info.
