Ladies' Night November 20!

We've decided to improve the quality of our next meeting by inviting all WBA first mates, boatresses, significant others and spouses to attend the meeting at Midway Point to hear Seb Borrello's presentation on the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, NY. Seb and Bonnie love the summer lifestyle of the scenic St. Lawrence seaway. Come and share in one of the focal points of our hobby, and spend the evening with all you WBA friends! Pre-meeting dinner starts at 5:30 p.m. (Ladies' dinners will be on the Club!) and the meeting begins promptly at 7. See below for more details.

Mark Your Calendar: Holiday Party Dec. 6, Banquet Jan. 17

We've set the official dates for our two big annual events. The Holiday Party will be at Bob and Mildred Van Guilder's home in The Colony on Saturday evening, Dec. 6. Invitations forthcoming. The Annual WBA Banquet will be at our usual venue, the Canyon Creek Country Club on January 17, 2009, with cocktails beginning at 6:30 p.m. Mark your calendar now!

WBA Proves Popular at Texas State Fair

A small but high quality contingent of WBA members brought their boats to Fair Park in Dallas on Columbus Day, October 13, for the annual exhibit at the State Fair of Texas. Lots of kids were at the Fair that day due to the school holiday, and the boats were situated along one of the entrance walkways to the fair. Special thanks to all who took the time and made the effort to represent our Club at this important event!

Lisa Daniels, Signalperson, is Here to Help!

A number of years ago, the WBA created the position of "Signalman" to be the officer of the club looking after the health, well-being and special concerns of the membership. Lisa Daniels (lisa@LRDaniels.com) has recently taken up the cause anew, with the slightly revised title of Signalperson. Please let Lisa know if you or a family member are ill, in the hospital, or have special needs that the Club might support. Lisa reports at each month's meeting, and is ready to help.

White Wows WBA with Heroic Lifeboat Presentation

Volunteers of the RNLI dash to rescue emperiled boats using a gravity launch ramp (l). Their self-righting boats brave rough seas to perform rescues (r).

Lew White shared slides, movies and commentary regarding the volunteer lifesaving organization known as the RNLI, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The RNLI is one of Lew's favorite charitable organizations. Members of the venerable institution have been saving lives off the coast of the United Kingdom since 1824. Generations of men and women have served as rescue workers for the RNLI, and their stories created a compelling presentation.

Updates from the WBA Shop in Lucas

Troy Marshall's 1948 Hacker Triple

Clockwise from above: Dramatic hull curvature and fresh side planks; Perfect fairing and countersinking for square-drive bronze fasteners show highest levels of craftsmanship; Robin's reversed clamp squeezes planks together for perfect seams; Troy Marshall(l) and Robin McGeorge(r) show Lew White (center) the tools of their trade. Troy holds a 90-degree plane used to create square edges on the Hacker's planks. Robin is holding the purpose-build router that follows the precise line of the installed plank to cut a matching edge on the next new plank. Next step will be to right the boat to begin work on the deck frames and upper side planks.

Phil Wolff's Century Sea Maid

Phil Wolff is getting a helping hand from his neighbor, friend and new member Richard Colvin, seen above right measuring for a new bottom frame for Phil's Sea Maid. Richard brings years of wooden boat experience to the club, and has provided Phil a shot in the arm to move his ambitious project along. Phil and Richard work together when schedules permit, and the Sea Maid shows real promise!

Don't Miss our Last Regular Meeting of the Year, Nov. 20!

Come with your boatress to the November meeting and hear Seb Borrello's presentation on Clayton. Be there on November 20 at the Midway Point (meeting start time is 7 p.m.). Midway Point Restaurant is located on the southwest corner of Midway and LBJ 635. After this, it's Holiday Parties and stuff, so make a special effort to attend this final regular meeting of 2008.

Join us for a light meal and moderate libation prior to the meeting. We'll gather at Midway Point at 5:30 on November 20. See you there!

Please take a look in the shed or garage for the leftover parts or other saleable items you can donate to the club. Bring them to any WBA meeting, or contact David Kanally at david@historywithheart.com for pickup.
