Including coverage of Lucas Lunacy! | October, 2010 |
Our brothers and sisters in the Southwest Chapter of the ACBS are finalizing the last details of the 2010 Austin Hill Country Boat Show, Oct. 14-17, and it's now up to us to have a good WBA representation there. Several WBA members from the DFW area have already committed to attending, but we'd love to have a few more. |
Horseshoe Bay is a gorgeous venue on LBJ, one of Texas' few constant-level lakes. Fall is here, and the time is right for you to attend the Hill Country Show. For more info, call Scott Reichardt, 830-598-4661, hsbadmiral@hotmail.com |

White Rock Event Historic and Patriotic
For the second year in a row, the WBA participated in the Corinthian Sailing Club's Open House on White Rock Lake. This year's event fell on the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, and we were sure to mark the day appropriately with a color guard honoring the memory of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The Marines, the Navy and the Coast Guard Auxiliary provided representatives to bear the colors. Bob Van Guilder lent his beautiful Dart Triple Cockpit to the ceremony, piloting the elegant craft at harbor speed at the head of a parade of WBA boats, twice circling the bay in front of the Corinthian Sailing Club's clubhouse. The event was a highlight of the noon hour, affording the many attendees a good view and a moving ceremony. The day's festivities also included a Laser-class sailing regatta, complimentary hot dogs, chips and beverages provided by the Corinthian Sailing Club, and an in-the-water display of some of the WBA's proudest vessels. Live music was provided by "Low Hanging Fruit." Watch the video. See Richard Haug's slideshow. Special thanks to For the Love of the Lake, the non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and improvement of the White Rock Lake area. The WBA has been invited to provide even more boats next year to help celebrate the Lake's Centennial on June 25, 2011. |

Get ready for a great guest night at the regular NOVEMBER meeting of the WBA, Nov. 18, 2010 at the Midway Point Restaurant. Guy McCollum, WBA member and wooden boating advocate, will be presenting his experiences at the ACBS Annual International Boat Show in Michigan. |
By Guy's account, this was one of the largest and finest boat shows ever, with 128 boats on display in the water and over 40 on land. So bring your spouse, your significant other, your BFF, or your lonesome neighbor and join us for the Guest Night meeting on November 18. Dinner begins at 5:30, guests are on the house. |

Parish Presentation Documents Chris-Craft Business in the Glory Days
John Parish really did his homework preparing the Chris-Craft presentation he gave at the WBA September meeting. Tracing the business' growth from the 20's through the 50's, John noted that other presentations on the company could be done to discuss the chapters preceding and following these "glory days". John covered the building of the original plant in Algonac, MI, through the company's expansion in various states across the country, to its eventual sale. Great job, John! |

Lucas Shop Update: Do you speak Chine-ese?
Well, it was well worth a trip by the Bilge Pump editorial staff and photography team to Lucas on Saturday to witness chines in the making. Mark Wilson and Marc Hill are collaborating, with the able help of Dave Kuneman, on the steaming, planing, sizing, clamping and fastening of stout oak |
chine boards for their '68 Chris-Craft Super Sports. Above, left: Both chines are already clamped into place on Mark Wilson's boat. Above, right: Dave Kuneman mans the electric hand planer while Mark Wilson (left) and Marc Hill (right) provide physical and moral support. |

Next Meeting Oct. 21st--Don't Miss It! Join us at the Midway Point on Thursday, October 21st for the next monthly meeting of the WBA. We'll be discussing the Austin/Hill Country Show at Lake LBJ and our upcoming November Guest Night, too! Mark Webster will be presenting the history of Classic Wooden Race Boats. We've been seeing some faces from the past as well as new members! The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 21st at the Midway Point at LBJ and Midway Road. Join us for a light meal and moderate libation at 5:30 p.m. at the Midway Point prior to the meeting. Shop Talk and Musings: As the Austin/Hill Country Show approaches, I thought it would be a good time to say THANKS to the Southwest Chapter of the ACBS for their long and faithful support and involvement in the WBA. These guys join our club, travel many miles to attend our Ride 'n Show, plus they provide some financial support to the event. We should take every opportunity to reciprocate, and here are two great ones: First, if you don't already belong to the ACBS, please consider joining. Second, if you haven't already signed up for the Hill Country Show, Oct. 14-17, please give it some serious thought, then call Scott Reichardt at 830-598-4661 and let him know you're coming. And, finally: Please take a look in the shed or garage for the leftover parts or other saleable items you can donate to the club. Bring them to any WBA meeting, or contact Phil Wolff at myoldboats@gmail.com for pickup. |
