Scott Myers Offers Varnishing and Painting Advice at August Meeting

The August 15, 2024 meeting of the WBA was held at Two Guys from Italy in Dallas, and on Zoom for those who could not attend in person. President Phil Brosseau conducted the normal business of the club, with officers giving their respective reports.

Past president Scott Myers presented a slide show of about 50 photos documenting how he painted and varnished his 1946 16’ Gar Wood Ensign Utility, "Ngo Said Yes." Scott was assisted by WBA member Rex Hoecker in this refresh. WBA member Jay Emerson advised on the best products, tools, and techniques to use.

Project Updates from the Robin McGeorge Boat Shop and Beyond!

(Above) Lew White stopped by the show recently to provide some Quality Assurance. He's looking over the McKeehans' Continental here.

(Above) Craig Godfrey, Carl Lapiska and Phil Brosseau toil over the AMC V-8 in the Century Partners' Sabre. The engine hasn't been run much since a rebuild, so they have some details to work out.

(Above) Jay Emerson is spiling new planks on his current '65 Chris-Craft Ski project in his shop in McAlester, OK.

(Above) Gordon Spriggs, with help from Joel Odom, cuts a gunwale cap for his Glen-L barrel back on the band saw.

(Above) Joel Odom wipes down the port side of the McIlvoys' Coronado in preparation for another coat of varnish.

Phil Wolff is swapping out the faulty 390 from his Resorter in favor of a 427, just until he can get the 390 rebuilt.

(Above) Chris McKeehan pulls upholstery staples from a piece of dash trim from her Continental. Vinyl for the interior has been sourced.

(Above) Carl Lapiska's Super Sport is getting some special aft deck treatment here, as Carl experiments to find the best way to run a rabbet across the aft deck to give it a neat, finished look.

(Above) Jay uses the spiling plank to mark the plank stock for cutting. This would make a great presentation, Jay!

(Above) Gordon's Glen-L project is now in small stall #1, next to Greg McIlvoy's Century Coronado.

(Above) Bill Mott and Joel Odom are beaming and the Coronado is gleaming! Still several coats to go, however, before the varnishing is complete.

Phil calls this operation a "shoe-horn", but we're sure he'll soon be enjoying his rocket on the water.

Next Monthly Meeting September 19, Featuring Growth through Social Media!

boatOur next meeting will be Thursday, September 19th 2024, at 7 p.m. at Two Guys From Italy in Dallas. Come at 5:30 and join us for the pre-meeting dinner. You'll receive an email reminder for the meeting a few days prior. We'll be continuing our door prize tradition, giving out an e-book, or print book of the lucky winner's choice, or a complimentary design of a boat show placard. Our presentation this month will be by Matthew Ables, son of WBA member John Ables. Matthew is a successful social media influencer, and has figured out the formula for maximizing visibility online. He'll be sharing some ideas from his leading-edge perspective on how social media works, and how the WBA may increase interest and participation through online means.

If you can't join in person, you'll be using the Zoom application for your cell phone or your home computer. To make things easier at meeting time, it would be a good idea for you to go to your normal smart phone app store to download Zoom Cloud Meetings, or go to Zoom.us on your home computer and sign up. Prior to the meeting, you will be sent an email with a link to join the meeting, and further instructions. Those who wait to download Zoom will also receive a link to do that just before the meeting starts. If you are among those who need a few attempts to be successful with technology, you may want to get the downloading taken care of ahead of time.

Our meetings are a great opportunity to socialize with fellow WBA members and to talk shop on questions on everything from paint and varnish to carburetor kits. Please join us on Zoom to be a part of our monthly fellowship!

Shop Talk and Musings: Adair Art Display in Clayton, NY

WBA member David Kanally and Boatress Cheryl traveled to Clayton, NY a few weeks back to present the artwork of the late Bob Adair at the Antique Boat Museum during the annual Antique Boat Show on August 3. They also spent some quality time with summer Clayton area residents and longtime WBA members Seb and Bonnie Borrello during their trip.

Bob Adair's Chrysler Boat concept artwork was donated to the Antique Boat Museum by the WBA, and has been on prominent display in the Museum's gallery all season. The collection will remain in the permanent care of the museum in a climate-controlled environment. David's presentation will be repeated at a WBA meeting in 2025.

And finally, please take a look in the shed or garage for leftover parts or other salable items you would like to donate to the Club. Contact David Kanally at david@historywithheart.com for more info.
