Project Updates from the Robin McGeorge Boat Shop and Beyond!
(Above) Barney Gulley gets top billing this issue for completing the staining, varnishing and painting of his 1957 Yellow Jacket Riviera.
(Above) Chris McKeehan applies another coat of Interlux 96 to the hull of the McKeehans' 1959 Chris-Craft Continental.
(Above) Carl Lapiska fairs a new section of the aft deck of his 1964 Chris-Craft Super Sport. The old deck plank had a flat spot that could not be faired by sanding.
(Above) Lou Zettler has offered his 1960 Chris-Craft Continental project for sale, and at this writing, a couple WBA members have expressed serious interest.
(Above, l-r) New member Gordon Spriggs gets put to work on his first visit to the shop by Greg McIlvoy as the guys roll and tip the second full strength coat of Epifanes Clear to Greg's 1956 Century Coronado |

(Above) Barney is now turning his attention to the wiring of the boat, the installation of the steering wheel and cables, and the refinishing of his rebuilt Johnson outboard's cowl.
(Above) Carl Lapiska gives Chris a hand taping off a few low spots in the deck varnish of the Continental. The tiny valleys were filled with varnish, and will be sanded flat.
(Above) Carl checks the new deck section for fairness, bending a batten over the curved surface and looking for gaps or high spots.
(Above) It looks like the Zettler Continental will stay in the club. Lou is offering it at a good price, and an investment by the new owner in a 5200 bottom will bring it back to life!
Greg's Coronado has the right color now, and will continue to receive many more coats of varnish over the coming weeks. Following varnish, the white sections will be repainted with Interlux Brightside.

Next Monthly Meeting August 15, Featuring Varnishing and Boot Stripe Tips!
Our next meeting will be Thursday, August 15th 2024, at 7 p.m. at Two Guys From Italy in Dallas. Come at 5:30 and join us for the pre-meeting dinner. You'll receive an email reminder for the meeting a few days prior. We'll be continuing our door prize tradition, giving out an e-book, or print book of the lucky winner's choice, or a complimentary design of a boat show placard. Our presentation this month will be by Scott Myers who will share some lessons learned in the recent re-varnishing of his Gar Wood Ensign. Scott will also take us through the ups and downs of painting a boot stripe on a boat, a skill we should all learn and master.
If you can't join in person, you'll be using the Zoom application for your cell phone or your home computer. To make things easier at meeting time, it would be a good idea for you to go to your normal smart phone app store to download Zoom Cloud Meetings, or go to Zoom.us on your home computer and sign up. Prior to the meeting, you will be sent an email with a link to join the meeting, and further instructions. Those who wait to download Zoom will also receive a link to do that just before the meeting starts. If you are among those who need a few attempts to be successful with technology, you may want to get the downloading taken care of ahead of time.
Our meetings are a great opportunity to socialize with fellow WBA members and to talk shop on questions on everything from paint and varnish to carburetor kits. Please join us on Zoom to be a part of our monthly fellowship!
Shop Talk and Musings: Chrysler Presentation in Clayton, August 3
WBA member David Kanally and Boatress Cheryl will be heading to Clayton, NY on Friday, where David will give a presentation Saturday morning during the annual boat show of the Antique Boat Museum. The presentation will feature the history of Chrysler Boats in Plano, as well as the personal history of the late Bob Adair, longtime WBA member and featured artist at the museum's art gallery this summer. The presentation will be recorded, and available in the coming weeks for those interested. It's also on the WBA meeting program list for 2025.
And finally, please take a look in the shed or garage for leftover parts or other salable items you would like to donate to the Club. Contact David Kanally at david@historywithheart.com for more info. |
