WBA members proudly display our boats for Dallas Winter Boat Show attendees, Feb. 1-10
For the first time in several years, the WBA was invited to display a number of members' antique and classic boats at the Dallas Winter Boat Show, February 1-10. The show, one of the largest in the country, was well attended on opening weekend, and allowed thousands of North Texans to see some fine examples of boats of various ages, including Bob Van Guilder's 1931 Dart, Robin McGeorge's 1948 Greavette, Troy Marshall's 1957 Chris-Craft Cavalier, David Kanally's 1957 Cowell, Jennifer Johnson's 1969 Chris-Craft XK 19, Roy Schindler's 1969 XK 19, and Mark Webster's 1973 XK 22.
The display also included a large tri-fold poster made by Elizabeth Webster, recounting the various activites and history of the club. A DVD of the runs from last year's Ride & Show and Hill Country Show, plus a few scenes from Classics on the Lake at Pier 121 played in a continuous loop on the display table. Sales of T-shirts, copies of The Varnished Truth, and pins help raise funds for the club.
Visitors of all ages stopped to appreciate the unique quality and craftsmanship of the classic craft, and many noted that the club's boats were their favorites of the entire show! Several recounted their own memories of their younger years learning to fish, water ski or drive using their parents' or grandparents' wooden boats.
Many thanks to the many volunteer members who manned the display, which gave our club great visibility, and even created some leads for new members.
Please make plans to attend our first business meeting of 2008 on Thursday February 21 at the Midway Point restaurant at 635 LBJ and Midway. We'll begin the meeting promptly at 7 with the very important task of planning the dates and formats of our events for the year. WBA President Bob Van Guilder has some great ideas for enhancing our events, but needs your input and involvement to be sure we have the best year ever.
In addition, WBA member Marc Richter will present the history of wooden boats based on a book he won at a recent WBA meeting drawing. See what can happen if you come to a meeting? Don't miss it!
Join us for a light meal and moderate libation prior to the meeting. We'll gather at Midway Point at 5:30. See you there!
Please take a look in the shed or garage for the leftover parts or other saleable items you can donate to the club. Bring them to any WBA meeting, or contact David Kanally at david@historywithheart.com for pickup.
